The Capital City Council of MoveOn.org will stage a rally and speak out for the hopes and dreams of the 99% on Thursday, Nov. 17, at 5:30 p.m. in front of Broadmoor Middle School at the corner of Sharp Road and Goodwood Blvd. in the West Sherwood Park neighborhood of Baton Rouge. We will focus attention on crumbling infrastructure and other societal priorities gone begging for lack of federal and state funding. The school is but one symbol of critical needs ignored by the current majority in Congress and at the State level, too. As the congressional Super Committee on deficit reduction goes into its final week of negotiation, we need to maintain pressure on our legislators to keep these priorities straight. Our economy is suffering from stagnation, and now is not the time to trim the government budget in the short term while worrying about long term debt.
At the same time, we feel cause to celebrate key victories scored across our country in the past Tuesday’s election. . . for union rights in Ohio, for a woman’s right to choose in Mississippi, for the long standing rights of voters in Maine, and the list goes on. We view all of these as hopeful portents for advancing a progressive agenda at home and nationally, now and during the coming election year. So breakout the nachos and soda pop. . . no beer for the masses, we’re afraid, we will be on school grounds, after all. It may not be time to cook a whole brisket for the masses, but let’s have a mini tailgate Thursday evening for the cause!
